Oral cancer refers to malignant tumors or growths in the tissues of the mouth, and it is a potentially life-threatening condition. Fortunately, many dentists and periodontists screen their patients for signs of this illness so they can refer them to an appropriate specialist if necessary. Here’s a quick look at a few symptoms and common risk factors of oral cancer.
What Are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?
While no two oral cancers are exactly alike, they often manifest themselves as growths, lumps, or especially thick areas of skin on the lips, gums, tongue, inner cheeks, or the roof or floor of the mouth. Symptoms of oral cancer include:
- Open sores that don’t heal
- Frequent bleeding
- Pain in the tongue or jaw
- Sore throat
- A white or red patch on your oral tissues
- Loose teeth
- Trouble chewing or swallowing
While most dentists and periodontists are not qualified to treat oral cancer, they can refer patients who show worrying signs to appropriate specialists who can diagnose the problem and address it appropriately. This can allow you to detect oral cancer in its early stages and have it treated before it becomes gravely serious.
What Are a Few Risk Factors for Oral Cancer?
Researchers have identified a few factors that increase a person’s risk of oral cancer. A few of these include:
- Tobacco use: Smoking or chewing tobacco exposes your oral tissues to carcinogenic chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer.
- Excessive alcohol consumption: Drinking too frequently and heavily can increase your risk of oral cancer, and the problem only gets worse if you also use tobacco.
- The lips being exposed too much to the sun: Just like neglecting to wear sunscreen can increase your risk of skin cancer, forgoing SPF lip balm can make you more likely to develop oral cancer.
- Human papillomavirus: While HPV causes no problems and goes away on its own for most people, it can make oral cancer more likely for others.
- Compromised immune system: People whose immune systems are weakened by illness or medication may be more likely to develop oral cancer.
Many periodontists offer oral cancer screenings that can detect the problem early so the damage it causes can be minimized. Consulting with your oral health professional is the best way to ensure your mouth stays in good health.
